Brooklyn Nook

Brooklyn, NY

Our client wanted to transform an awkward garden-level room into a comfortable place to rest, read, and watch TV. The solution was an affordable yet custom retrofit that included a built-in sofa and new cabinetry. The plush, down-filled cushions are upholstered in a rich textured fabric with piped edges for a clean and modern look. The cabinetry uses reclaimed wood, found in a discard pile in the client's basement, which was cut to size and clad in a horizontal shiplap pattern with its rough finish preserved. The cabinets provide ample display for books, records, and mementos, plus closed storage for audio/visual equipment and childrens' toys. Oil-rubbed bronze pulls accent the doors and drawers. The room is enhanced with new furnishings and recessed lighting, as well as a new set of wood-paneled privacy doors to the primary bedroom.

A series of modest & affordable retrofits improve the function & experience of a single room.
