325 Clinton Avenue
Brooklyn, NY
A couple with a young child wanted to transform their 10th-floor apartment overlooking the Brooklyn skyline into a space that met their needs and aesthetics. The goal was to make the transformation inexpensive and simple. Upon entering, a recessed sitting area provides a convenient place for removing coats and shoes with a shelf above for keys and personal belongings. The seat and shelf are made of white oak with concealed mounting hardware. Replacing the existing damaged parquet wood floor was cost prohibitive, so instead it was sanded and coated in a durable epoxy finish that was tinted Cherokee Red—the color often used by Frank Lloyd Wright—which brings a bold and fresh look to the space.
The apartment's primary living spaces—kitchen, dining room, and living room—are all anchored by a storage wall of beige cabinetry. To save cost, this was created using standard IKEA components. At the end of the storage wall, floating white oak shelves provide space for display. The living room has additional floating white oak display shelves and closed storage below, which holds the client's extensive vinyl collection.
Adjacent to the living room, the child's nursery boasts a vibrant print wallpaper. Operable clerestory windows flood the room in natural daylight and provide ventilation when needed. The storage wall provides ample room to tuck away clothing and toys.
The kitchen was updated with modern appliances and classic white cabinetry, with under-cabinet lighting and stone composite counter tops. The backsplash is lined with high-gloss mini subway tile with a light blue glaze.
